Sweepingly beautiful and unflinchingly honest, All The Bright Places by Jennifer Niven is the most eloquent YA book of this generation. When two characters come together in a narrative it can seem forced and shallow, yet both Finch and Violet are so much more than words on a page. These characters come to life because of their stunningly realistic writing. The plot is one of immense beauty and the simplicity of it only serves to highlight the complexity of the issues raised in the novel. Depression is an issue most authors can write about, but very rare is a book that understands the mind of someone suffering it. Jennifer Niven has the gift to perfectly encompass the intricate and confusing ways mental illness can change lives and the consequences of admitting that there is a problem. All The Bright Places is truly a beautiful novel that will make you think for days about its characters and yourself in a totally new light. It is my choice for the best YA novel of this year and one truly worth losing sleep over.
