Author Spotlight: Becky Chambers
Reviewed by Eleanor Roberts
With three prestigious Hugo Awards under her belt (Wayfarers - Best Series 2019, A Psalm for the Wild Built - Best Novella 2022, A Prayer for the Crown Shy - Best Novella 2023), Becky Chambers is well and truly on her way to becoming science-fiction royalty. Her Wayfarers series (2014-2022) has bagged her dozens of nominations across multiple categories, and has left fans across the world excitedly awaiting her latest creations.
Although her intricate and immersive worldbuilding has earned her extensive praise, her greatest strength would be her deeply emotive character-based storytelling. Relatable themes of humanity, morality and personal identity are carefully entwined with her futuristic backdrop, lending a deeply personal perspective to her strange and otherworldly settings.
For fans of spacefaring adventure and survival in a universe so close and yet so far from our own, try the Wayfarers series, starting with A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet. For cozy, meditative contemplations of humanity, nature and connection, try the Monk and Robot novellas, starting with A Psalm for the Wild Built.
