"There are the goodbyes and then the fishing out of the bodies - everything in between is speculation"
Longlisted for the 2023 Women's Prize for fiction, Wandering Souls tells the story of three tenacious young people fleeing political unrest in Vietnam after the withdrawal of American troops in 1973. Inspired by the life of her grandmother, Pin expertly tackles the psychological and emotional tolls of the Vietnamese refugee experience in 1980s Britain and the deep, inescapable pressure to assimilate. Despite the horrors Pin confronts in her work, she offers us a deeply moving portrait of a family held together by fierce love and unrelenting hope. Truly one of the most beautiful books I've read all year.
