NOTE: In 1886 Sir Alfred Stephen moved that the Divorce Bill should extend the grounds for divorce to cover imprisonment for at least 7 years assault on the petitioner habitual drunkenness and desertion. It was refused royal assent leading to controversy within and without parliament.
