He was especially famous for his many studies of nude women. He established a particular style marked by erotic stylised scenes often with sado-masochistic and fetishistic subtexts. Born in Berlin Germany the son of a Jewish garment factory owner he fled Nazi Germany in 1938 working briefly as a photographer for the Straits Times in Singapore before serving with the Australian Army during WWII. In 1948 he married the Australian actress June Browne. Post war he worked as a freelance photographer producing fashion shoots and work for magazines such as 'Playboy'. In 1961 he settled in Paris where his career as a fashion photographer flourished. It was in Paris that his own particular style developed. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s his notoriety and fame greatly increased. In later life he lived in Monte Carlo and Los Angeles.
