London: R. Cocks & Co. (1843). Folio. Orig. blind-embossed cloth (covers marked). Spine gilt titled. (4 vi 236pp.). With calligraphically engrv. title-page 3 full-page plates and with copious engrv. music throughout. Uncut. NOTE: Spohr (1784-1859) published his Violinschule in 1832 and an English translation by C. Rudolphus appeared almost immediately. It codified many of the new conventions and practices of violin playing and Spohr introduced his chin rest which he had invented in about 1820. His pupil U.C. Hill produced a revised edition of the English translation in 1839. This new translation is by John Bishop who asserts in the preface (dated January 1843) that 'numerous accidentals which through oversight were omitted in the German copy have in this edition been carefully inserted during the revision of the plates; so that in this respect I think I may lay claim to greater accuracy than even the original itself'.
