Original copperplate engraved map. Venice circa 1696. Depicts the coast of America from California (shown as an island) to Terra del Fuego New Zealand is shown bottom centre marked 'not yet well known' and a note 'discovered by the Dutch in 1654'. Southern Tasmania (Terra d'Antonio Diemens) and part of Australia (Nova Hollanda) are shown on the left. A most attractive and highly decorative map with an ornately illustrated cartouche in right upper corner. Measurements 64.5 x 47cm. including margins. In particularly fine condition. Tooley 350. NOTE: Vincenzo Maria Coronelli the son of a tailor was born in 1650 and died in 1718. He is famous for his construction of terrestrial and celestial globes particularly a large pair he made for Louis XIV. In all he drew and engraved over five hundred maps as well as globes and founded the first geographical society the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was appointed Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic and taught Geography at the University.
