Sydney (1925). 8vo. Orig. printed wrapper. (64pp.). With num. illusts. 1st edition. ANB 1901-1950: No. 34912 records the revised edition of 1933 only. The copy here offered in fine condition is signed by the author. Rare. NOTE: Joseph Pearson (1849-1939) draper cyclist and map publisher was born in Sydney. In 1882 Pearson visited England and Europe and again later in 1893. On both visits he cycled extensively using available road maps. Inspired by his experiences he vowed to persuade his fellow Australian cyclists "to take an occasional tour in the country...to get into our wide spaces". In 1898 Pearson compiled and published "Handbook and Guide to the Roads of New South Wales" the most detailed guide ever published in Australia. This work formed the basis of a series of road maps and guides that subsequently followed and for which Pearson became renowned. Pearson published this account here offered as a reminiscence of the people places practical hints and experiences of early cycling in Australia. (Australian Dictionary of Biography).
