London: William Hodges (1785-1787). Folio (48 x 37 cm). Later half-calf over marbled paper boards. Spine gilt. Title and text in English and French. With double-page engrv. map and 48 double-page aquatint plates by Hodges. First edition of the first great view books of India (Abbey 416). Hodges the official artist on Capt. James Cook's second voyage to the South Seas arrived in India in 1780. He returned to London in 1784 and single-handedly produced the prints for this publication from his drawings and paintings. The first prints in Vol. I show some marginal damp stains otherwise a fine and complete copy. A most handsome work.
