Paris: J.-N. Pissot 1781. Two quarto volumes bound in original full old tree calf (slightly discoloured) with gilt borders to front and rear boards. Inside dentelles. Spines skilfully re-backed. Marbled endpapers. Complete with both half-titles. The text is in Greek and Latin. Some damp-staining to text and bookplates of E. P. Beck on front endpapers and stamp of E. P. Beck on half-titles; otherwise this is a fine tight copy of the first edition. Sophocles (c. 496 - 406 BC) is considered one of the great tragic playwrights of Classical Greece in company with fellow tragedians Aeschyclus and Euripides. The two volumes here offered comprise Sophocles' seven complete surviving plays: Ajax Flagellifer Electra Antigone and Trachini? in Volume I; and ?dipus Coloneus ?dipus Tyrannus and Philoctetes in Volume II.
