London: J. Dowding 1842. 4to. Or.ribbed cl. (spine extremities strengthened) with later printed paper titling labels on spines. Complete with 2 engrv. portraits 2 title-vigns. and 97 engraved plates and maps most of which are fold. Some foxing and offsetting mainly at beginning and end of text. Corner of margin on frontisp. in Vol. I torn without loss. This work is now much sought after for the fine steel engravings with which it is illustrated and the plates in the English edition (as above) are superior to the American editions. NOTE: The provenance of this set is of particular significance being Dr. William Bland's set with his bookplate and inscription as follows: "For William Bland Pitt St. Sydney N.S.W. from B.C. Rodd March 25th 1865" and then in handwriting " ... this was not accepted as a present but credited as part payment for his medical a/c for the year 1861 & the remainder of his yearly bill was compensated in useless articles ... forced on the dear Dr. which was mostly given away as useless trash". Both volumes so inscribed. William Bland (1789-1868) was a medical practitioner and politician in the early colonial days of Sydney.
