John Brown (1722-1787) of Haddington, Scotland, was a minister of the Secession Church and theologian who published extensively on theological topics. Brown's substantial and beautiful Self-Interpreting Bible was first published in 1778. Designed for popular use, it remained in print for over a century. As noted in the Oxford DNB (2004), Brown's Bible was "as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress [...]."
