Complete with 2 engraved title-pages with vignettes, 53 full-page engr. plates of which some are coloured, num. text-illustrations, maps of which some are coloured including the large folding map of the South Eastern portion of Australia at end of Vol. I, as well as the 8pp. of Press Opinions at beginning of Vol. I. Previous owners bookplate on front end-paper. Hinges cracked, otherwise an excellent crisp set entirely complete. NOTE: Mitchell was sent out to N.S.W. as Deputy Surveyor-General in 1827, after serving in the Peninsular Campaigns. The first of his famous explorations was sent out in 1831 to search for a mythical river reported running Northward of the Liverpool Range, by a convict. He penetrated as far as the Barwon on the Queensland frontier. The second journey was undertaken in 1835 to survey the course of the River Darling. The third expedition was to determine any possible connection between the Darling and Murray rivers. It was made in 1836 and resulted in the discovery of Australian Felix.
